Durban, a popular coastal destination in South Africa is famous for its subtropical climate, its gorgeous sunny beaches which are enjoyed by locals all year round, and the deliciously spicy Durban Indian Curries. Home to the largest population of people of Indian descent outside of India, Durban is home to many restaurants and take-aways where the most popular curries found on menus across the city are “Mutton Curry“, “Chicken Curry” and “Beans Curry“. One has the choice of having a curry with a serving of rice, roti or….as the famous “Bunny Chow” which has nothing to do with bunnies at all, but is a hollowed out loaf of bread used as a vessel for the deliciously spicy curry. The curries are prepared using a unique blend of “Durban Curry Masala” which can be blended to one’s preferred level of heat – mild, medium, hot or “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue” (also known as ‘mother-in-law masala’) which is a “blow your mind hot”! The name itself evokes images of a sharp-tongued old lady rebuking her daughter-in-law for not preparing a strong curry according to mother-in-law’s exacting standards!
