South African Braai
June 25, 2022
Summer is the time for barbecues and in South Africa, a barbecue is known as a Braai. Short for ”Braaivleis” it translates to meats roasted on a coal fire.
South Africans don’t need an excuse to Braai. Come rain or shine, braaing has got to be the most favored social pastime of South Africans. It is so popular that 24 September, Heritage Day in South Africa, is also known as National Braai Day! There is even a popular show called ”The Ultimate Braai Master” that is dedicated to the art of braaing. And it really is an Art! From the preparation of the fire using both coal and wood, to the long slow burn that give the food a smoky, charred flavor, to the artful marination of the meats and vegetables that take center stage on the Braai, it is a true Occasion!
It is very typical for friends and family to come together and socialise for hours around the fire, drink in hand. Everyone contributes to the feast and festivities. It is not uncommon for the host to put out an array of salads and sides while the guests bring their own meat, drinks and a dessert to share. This is called a ”Bring & Braai” where everyone brings their own ”Chop & Dop” (meat and (alcoholic) beverage) and the food is shared by all.
So why not join us at this Bring & Braai social gathering where you can experience a true South African Braai.
